My son is now going to a private school that observes Jewish, Christian and the traditional secular holidays so he was off on Monday for Rosh Hashanah. In fact the entire month of September he has one day off each week! With new computer time rules (which are working!) I find it is best to “help” him find things to do if he has a lot of free time. On Labor Day we went fruit picking at Apple Annie’s. This Monday we went hiking up at Mt. Lemmon.

We began with lunch at Viv’s Cafe because it is good to start a hike with a full stomach. Then up, up, up the mountain we went. The temperature dropped from 100° to a delicious 72°.
We decided to try a new trail and I was hoping to do a loop but after a long time of climbing uphill and unsure of exactly how much further we still had to go we decided to simply turn around. The hike back down was sheer perfection. Blue skies, a few clouds and oddly, some rumbles of thunder in the distance made the perfect autumnal hiking ambience. The path was shaded with dappled patches which I absolutely love!

Driving back down the mountain we could smell rain and observed some wet stretches of road way but no rain fell on us. We decided to stop at DQ for ice cream which ended up being our dinner and came home to collapse on the couch and watch “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”.
I went low carb and lost five pounds the first week. This is an eating habit I believe I can do long term. I am going with 30g of net carbs while still trying to lose a few more pounds but after that I am thinking 50g net carb with the occasional meal off. Oddly enough the thing I miss most is fruit but I am not missing all the junk food. For me I think I need to avoid carbs in general and not just sugar to beat the cravings.
I am doing a great job of trying to meditate everyday, even if just for 10 minutes. As for actually meditating successfully….hopefully in time. I have been exploring Insight Timer and find it helps. I have one timer set up that I do in the afternoons and have been trying different guided meditations in the morning or at bedtime.
Feet to the fire. Weight 141.8 lbs. I swam 23 days in August and did yoga 23 days. Not bad.
On the menopausal front another crazy month. No period but ferocious hot flashes continued the first half of the month before tapering in both intensity and frequency. Then I started sleeping through the night and actually felt pretty good the rest of the month. I certainly had more energy and felt way less foggy. Gives me hope for the future.
I am so glad I signed up for an on-line writing class. I am thrilled to be learning again!
I changed from bowling Thursday nights to Tuesday mornings. I think this schedule will suit me much better.
I have finally found the rhythm to my days I have been searching for. I no longer feel compelled to stick to a strict routine but plan one day at a time. I am finding everything still gets done and many chores seem easier. I am listening to my physical and mental needs and life is good.
Wow we had a busy Labor Day weekend but it was all good. It is no secret that autumn is far and away my favorite season but I do my best to enjoy each season and holiday in it’s own time. This weekend we managed to combine the best of summer: swimming and grilling out, with the best of autumn: apple picking and college football.
We started out with an after dinner swim on Friday night which was marvelous. It is dark here by 7:30p and it feels so different swimming under a night sky.
On Saturday morning I had my first bowling of the season with my once a month league and Saturday evening it was time for Wildcat Football. Yes they lost but the marching band still rocked it!
Sunday we had a quiet at home day planned so we could recover from the late night. (Will the Pac-12 ever see reason and schedule for the convenience of the team and the fans?) I did some laundry and watched the Cubs win and then we all went for a swim. Luckily we grilled our burgers early as a rumbly thunderstorm dropped in. So after dinner we played Sagrada and then retreated to our separate spaces to read , listen to the rain and in my case watch “Bridget Jone’s Diary”. We got a nice amount of rain overnight, always appreciated here.
On Monday we drove to Willcox and Apple Annie’s to pick apples, pears and peaches. We shared some pie (apple crumb and pecan) and ice cream and enjoyed the very blue sky and a refreshing breeze. We came home for one last swim joking about how the pool would be closed the next day. (That idea completely confused my son.) We played with my son’s waterproof camera taking all kinds of crazy pictures and movies and had a blast.
No autumn temps here for at least two more months, maybe longer, but mentally I am already switching gears. I washed my fall quilt today (same weight as my summer quilt just a different design) and pulled out my new orange ‘Life is Good’ t-shirt decorated with leaves that I have been saving. The weather channel announced it is now meteorological autumn and that is good enough for me! Over the next two weeks I am sure I will be slowly sneaking bits of autumn into my life.
