Where was Jamie Lee Curtis?

A few weeks ago I DVR’d “Halloween” off the IFC channel.  I thought this was a good choice as they don’t edit the movies they show.  It took me two days to watch the whole thing.  I only watched while my son was at school as I knew it was not appropriate for him.

The whole time I am watching the movie I am thinking to myself, “Where is Jamie Lee Curtis?  Maybe it was ‘Friday the 13th’ she was in? Am I just not recognizing her?” Whatever, because the movie scared the pants off me.  I was so glad to be watching it during the day and well before Halloween.

But the whole Jamie Lee Curtis thing was bugging me so after finishing the movie I googled “Halloween”.  I read the plot synopsis and there were some key differences. What the heck did I watch?  And how did I miss Jamie Lee Curtis, she was the lead screaming teenager!

Further research informs me I watched a remake version from 2007.  What? Sheesh, what a disappointment.  Ah, all the nudity and sex make sense now.  And now that I think about the clothes and the cars… yeah, not feeling too bright here.  In my defense I was a bit distracted by the crazy big guy running around killing people in graphically violent ways.

And now I have to watch the original 1978 version and scare the pants off myself again.

From the 1978 version.

My Birthday

Yes I still enjoy celebrating my birthday, even after so many!  I am now the grand age of 52!  Last week we kind of had a three day celebration.

Day One

It all started with bowling a new scratch high series in my Tuesday morning league, a 555!  Anytime I break 500 I am really happy.

Then I stopped at Trader Joe’s and was happily surprised to find all the pumpkin goodness had arrived.  I tried to restrain myself but I find it best to buy some things early because chances are they will be gone the next time I go.  So hello pumpkin dog treats, pumpkin bagels, pumpkin oatmeal, spiced pumpkin seeds etc.  Many items won’t be opened until October, when I am ready for pumpkin in all things.

And then the first official part of my birthday….going to see the Cubs play the Diamond Backs in Phoenix.  Cubs won 9-1 and Baez got two more RBI’s to continue leading the National League!  I felt sort of bad for the D’backs because there were WAY MORE Cubs fans than D’back fans in the stands.

(I tried to take pictures with the camera on my phone and none of them turned out. I got this one off the web at stadiumjourney.com).

Chase-Field-Interior-1It is a cool stadium, different.  It has a retractable roof which is usually closed for the heat with the a/c on!

My son had my name up on the big board for the birthdays.  He didn’t say Happy Birthday Mom, but put in my full name (first and last) instead which I found rather  funny. I walked out of the stadium singing “Go Cubs Go” and didn’t even mind the long drive home.

Day 2

My husband and son were both home today despite it being a Wednesday, which really made the week feel weird.

We woke to solid cloud cover and brief showers of rain that turned steady in the late afternoon.  With a high temp only in the 80’s, a good 20° cooler than it has been, it truly was a gift of a day.

I helped my son bake my birthday cake, took a nap, listened to the rain and lit my vanilla pumpkin candle for the first time this season.

Day 3

IMG_8141

Now we get to my actual birthday (finally!).  I put new autumn themed sheets on my bed, did my writing class homework and enjoyed the lingering clouds. I ate 1/2 a pumpkin bagel for breakfast (and put the rest in the freezer!) and enjoyed a mug of hot pumpkin spice rooibos tea, first of the season.  And yes the a/c is still on and no it wasn’t nearly cold enough for hot tea but I did it anyway and I loved it.

IMG_8138The sun peeked out just as I was taking the photo creating cool shadows from the lace curtains.

I also colored a picture for my son to celebrate the first official day of autumn (22 September).  A few days ago he was cleaning up his room and found pictures I had colored for him in the past and asked why I hadn’t done any this school year.  Honestly I thought he might have out grown getting pictures from his Mom in his backpack and I didn’t want to embarrass him. Now I am happily looking for Halloween and Thanksgiving pictures to color!

My husband brought home Chicago Dogs from Luke’s Italian Beef for dinner and then I got to open presents and watch the Cleveland Browns finally win a football game.

My life is an embarrassment of riches!

Photo Friday: How Many….

…leaf garlands does it take to make a house look autumnal in the desert southwest?

Let’s start with the kitchen, one above each window and two under the cabinets.

Two in the family room.

IMG_8114One in the dining room.

IMG_8125One at the top of my bedroom closet.

IMG_8119And two in the upstairs hallway overlooking the living/dining room.

And one in front of my south facing office window that would be really hard to take a picture of.  That makes a grand total of eleven.  So the answer is it takes eleven leaf garlands to bring autumn to the southwest.

Photo Friday: It Felt Like September

My son is now going to a private school that observes Jewish, Christian and the traditional secular holidays so he was off on Monday for Rosh Hashanah.  In fact the entire month of September he has one day off each week!  With new computer time rules (which are working!) I find it is best to “help” him find things to do if he has a lot of free time.  On Labor Day we went fruit picking at Apple Annie’s.  This Monday we went hiking up at Mt. Lemmon.

IMG_8094Some early fall color starting.

We began with lunch at Viv’s Cafe because it is good to start a hike with a full stomach.  Then up, up, up the mountain we went.  The temperature dropped from 100° to a delicious 72°.

We decided to try a new trail and I was hoping to do a loop but after a long time of climbing uphill and unsure of exactly how much further we still had to go we decided to simply turn around.  The hike back down was sheer perfection.  Blue skies, a few clouds and oddly, some rumbles of thunder in the distance made the perfect autumnal hiking ambience.  The path was shaded with dappled patches which I absolutely love!

IMG_8100A stop at a scenic overlook on the way home. I believe that is the San Pedro Valley.

Driving back down the mountain we could smell rain and observed some wet stretches of road way but no rain fell on us.  We decided to stop at DQ for ice cream which ended up being our dinner and came home to collapse on the couch and watch “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”.

Best Monday in a really long time.

2018 Aspirations: August

Be Healthier

  1. I went low carb and lost five pounds the first week.  This is an eating habit I believe I can do long term.  I am going with 30g of net carbs while still trying to lose a few more pounds but after that I am thinking 50g net carb with the occasional meal off. Oddly enough the thing I miss most is fruit but I am not missing all the junk food.  For me I think I need to avoid carbs in general and not just sugar to beat the cravings.
  2. I am doing a great job of trying to meditate everyday, even if just for 10 minutes.  As for actually meditating successfully….hopefully in time.  I have been exploring Insight Timer and find it helps.  I have one timer set up that I do in the afternoons and have been trying different guided meditations in the morning or at bedtime.
  3. Feet to the fire.  Weight 141.8 lbs.  I swam 23 days in August and did yoga 23 days.  Not bad.
  4. On the menopausal front another crazy month.  No period but ferocious hot flashes continued the first half of the month before tapering in both intensity and frequency.  Then I started sleeping through the night and actually felt pretty good the rest of the month.  I certainly  had more energy and felt way less foggy.  Gives me hope for the future.

Interesting clouds.

Be Happier

  1. I am so glad I signed up for an on-line writing class.  I am thrilled to be learning again!
  2. I changed from bowling Thursday nights to Tuesday mornings.  I think this schedule will suit me much better.
  3. I have finally found the rhythm to my days I have been searching for.  I no longer feel compelled to stick to a strict routine but plan one day at a time.  I am finding everything still gets done and many chores seem easier.  I am listening to my physical and mental needs and life is good.

Autumn is nearing, I can feel it!

Meteorological Autumn is Here!

Wow we had a busy Labor Day weekend but it was all good.  It is no secret that autumn is far and away my favorite season but I do my best to enjoy each season and holiday in it’s own time.  This weekend we managed to combine the best of summer: swimming and grilling out, with the best of autumn: apple picking and college football.

We started out with an after dinner swim on Friday night which was marvelous.  It is dark here by 7:30p and it feels so different swimming under a night sky.

On Saturday morning  I had my first bowling of the season with my once a month league and Saturday evening it was time for Wildcat Football.  Yes they lost but the marching band still rocked it!

Sunday we had a quiet at home day planned so we could recover from the late night. (Will the Pac-12 ever see reason and schedule for the convenience of the team and the fans?)  I did some laundry and watched the Cubs win and then we all went for a swim.  Luckily we grilled our burgers early as a rumbly thunderstorm dropped in.  So after dinner we played Sagrada and then retreated to our separate spaces to read , listen to the rain and in my case watch “Bridget Jone’s Diary”.  We got a nice amount of rain overnight, always appreciated here.

The pie and ice cream smile!

On Monday we drove to Willcox and Apple Annie’s to pick apples, pears and peaches.  We shared some pie (apple crumb and pecan) and ice cream and enjoyed the very blue sky and a refreshing breeze.  We came home for one last swim joking about how the pool would be closed the next day.  (That idea completely confused my son.) We played with my son’s waterproof camera taking all kinds of crazy pictures and movies and had a blast.

No autumn temps here for at least two more months, maybe longer, but mentally I am already switching gears. I washed my fall quilt today (same weight as my summer quilt just a different design) and pulled out my new orange ‘Life is Good’ t-shirt decorated with leaves that I have been saving.  The weather channel announced it is now meteorological  autumn and that is good enough for me!  Over the next two weeks I am sure I will be slowly sneaking bits of autumn into my life.

DSCN0585Yes, this is one of the silly pictures of me.

Good Bye Summer!
