Birthday Joy List

Today is my 50th birthday!!  I have to admit I am pretty darn happy I have lived this long! So here is my joy list from the past few weeks:

  • Getting a bunch of small, lingering tasks done.
  • The public library (this would be on every joy list of mine!)
    • Some recent books from the library:
      • “Rebecca” (Daphne Du Maurier)
      • “A Fall of Marigolds” (Susan Meissner)
      • “Dead Wake.  The last crossing of the Lusitania” (Erik Larson)
      • “A Walk in the Woods”  (Bill Bryson)
      • “The Hiding Place” (Corrie Ten Boom)
  • Sitting on my swing at dusk watching the bats swoop around and knowing they are eating all those pesky mosquitos.
  • Two (in my lifetime) inventions that I find really useful:
    • the debit card
    • the DVR
  • Our local classical public radio station
  • Rain helping my rosebush bloom
  • The start of football season (Go Wildcats!  Go Broncos!)
Some people put on their game face, I put on my game shoes.
  • My son getting to play outside more with the cooler weather in the evenings and the neighborhood bully moving away.
  • Cake for dessert tonight!  Specifically  Coconut Pecan Upside Down Cake (which my son and I are making together after school today)

Happy Birthday to me! And to YOU whenever your birthday is!

Joy List

Catalina Mountains as seen from my new swing, aka my pretend front porch 🙂 .

Because of the looong holiday weekend I missed Wednesday HodgePodge. I will try again next week. And yes, I still have two Chicago posts to write. But not today. It is July and I am on vacation, sort of.
So instead, here is a list of what is bringing me joy these days:

Swimming – Like when I was kid.  I leisurely swim up and down the length of the pool luxuriating in the feel of the water and the movement of my body.  I don’t count laps or minutes, I just swim.

“Rogue Wave” – This is a game my son and I invented.  He floats around the pool in an inner tube pretending to take notes and make marine observations.  And then I, the “rogue wave”, “sneak up” and flip him over.  He loves this and making him happy makes me happy.  Plus it is a good arm workout.

Tuna fish sandwiches –  Yup, when I meal planned for the week I actually put sandwiches on the list for dinner. No guilt because I bought a loaf of the good rye bread.

The Hours Count” – By Jillian Cantor is the novel I am currently reading.  I love books that are fact based fiction.  I get to learn something and be entertained at the same time.

Sleeping – I have been sleeping great lately.  I think it is all the swimming plus getting in my 10k steps most some days.  (Well, I was doing really good before the holiday weekend and I am walking as I write this.)

Mother’s Day Swing –  I have been wanting a swing like this for a few years and this year I got one.  I LOVE this swing and even with the summer heat I use it most days.  I like to sit outside around sunset.  It is still hot, but bearable without the sun and if there is a breeze it can be quite pleasant. My son and I often sit there and read a chapter or two from our bedtime book.  I am finding this swing is a suitable substitute for a front porch (for now).

I love my new front porch substitute!

Lovin’ my Catalina Mountains and green grass view from my “front porch”.

Hope you are experiencing some July Joy!

Summer Joy List

Father’s Day banana split

I happily announce that my son and I have found a good rhythm for our days. We are both happy, productive (enough) and not constantly at loggerheads. Our days are dare I say, pretty joyful.

So taking a page from “My Giant Strawberries”  here is my Joy List:

  • Homemade chocolate waffles with fresh strawberries
  • The two new swim shirts Santa brought me (so much better than my last one which stretched out horribly after a few weeks of wear)
  • 90° pool water on a 114° day (yes it really was 114° on the last day of spring and no that is not normal, even for Tucson!)
  • Getting in our outing last week before the really bad heat settled in.  We went to the park, Goodwill, Viv’s Cafe and the library.  I scored some good finds at Goodwill including an eight CD Christmas set and a lovely cardigan to give me hope for cooler weather (in like four or five months).
  • A good stack of library books
  • My hot pink toenails
  • Banana splits for dinner on Father’s Day (it was 114° afterall)
  • Rewatching the “Sex and the City” series from the beginning
  • A nice mix of comedies, dramas and war movies on the DVR
  • An exciting NBA Finals, especially game 7.  Congrats to the city of Cleveland, I am very happy for you.
  • And finally this cute little bin I bought at Target to organize clothes:
Everytime I open my closet door he makes me smile.

Hey, it is officially summer! Happy Summer Everyone!
